've jusr been flicking Through
a copy of Jonuory's CU os one
does occasionally, and low and
behold, there is nor one single
C64 game review. Therefore I
would like ro take this opportunity to
wish the CU team great fortune in
their new marker, and I would also
like ro welcome all rhe C64 readers
rhar rhey have obandoned. We ore
rhe only C64/C1 26 dedicored

One rhing Though. Ever since the

mode a decision rhar not
everybody is happy wirh. The
readers that relished rhe listings and

affronred by our change rewards a
gome based magazine. Again I
must srress rhar Today's C64 marker
IS (in o vasr majority) games based,
and I'm sorry if anybody doesn't

reolise rhar. I don'r wish you all ro go
away, bur if you do wish ro sample
anorher magazine rhar carers for
your rasres I'd recommend
Commodore Disk User, our sisrer rirle,
you won'r be disappointed.

Now onro rhe cassette. Over rhe
rhree issues of YC so far you've hod
twelve games (twelve games for
£.5.85, plus three wonderful mags of
course), bur in rhe future rhings ore
likely ro change.

No doubt you've seen a gallery
or demos column in many other
rags. We intend to go one srep
further as we'd like ro pur your
graphical/musical stills/demos on
the tape, so rhar everyone can hear
and see them for themselves. As an
incentive, yours (if used) will win a
wonderful mystery prize (we've yer
ro decide whar ir is) rhar is worrh
mega-bucks, so send 'em in now...

Yours until Posr Apocalypse

Commodore distributor, Parkfield Communications is claiming that
Santa was overloaded with computers this year in the biggest
hardware boom since 1964. ^

With the C64 Light Fantastic and amiga 500 Batman packs
selling well, Loretta Cohen, Parkfield's managing director, sees this
as an especially surprising occurence "showing that the Batman
craze can overcome even the Chancellor's fight money policy".

During the run up to Christmas, Commodore and Parkfield hit a
landmark with the sale of the 200.000th amiga 500. This makes
the machine the most succesful 1 6-bit games computer in the UK
(in other words, bigger than the ST but less than the PC). Maybe
one day the Amiga may equal the number of sales that the C64
has achieved - one day in the far future though.

One day it may be possible for a pilot to clad'; up flying hours without leaving rhe

ground. SubLogic is nor only predicting rhis but also making moves towards
making it a reality through irs latest product Right Controls 1 .

Flight Controls is a console which incorporates a steering co i.mn and all of rhe
principal controls found in o modern lighr aircraft. If rhe U5 licensing authority, FAA,
approves, rhe combinarion of Flight Controls and Microsoft's FlighfSlmulator
(written by SubLogic) could consrirure a viable bircrafr' for logging the necessary
flying hours which a private pilot needs to maintain a licence. M

The fact that SubLogic is even approaching the FAA shows how far flight
simularors have come but would you rrust pilots who did most of their
rheir living room?

Although there are no plans ro produce the Flighr Conrrols unit for the C64,

This is Elire's offering
ro the Chrisrmos
compilation marker.
"Thrill Time" consists of
"Airwolf", "Scooby Doo".

Supplier: ELITE

Price: 9.99 (Cass) 14.99 (Disk)

"Battleships", "Saboteur",
and "Frank Bruno's World
Championship Boxing".
Obviously, the emphasis
on the package is value
for money, bur will it be
'Thrill Time' on Chrisrmos
morning - or will 'The
Sound Of Music" be an
enjoyable alternative?

For those of you who
can't remember it,
"Airwolf was an American
TV series. In ir, a Billion
dollar helicopter was
stolen from the US
Govemmenr. Much ro their
embarrassment, ir would
show up and solve Top
Secret missions. Then It
would fly off info rhe
sunset. It hod all rhe
fearures rhor you'd spend
o billion dollars on if you
were building rhe ultimate
chopper.

Anyway, this rime
several scienrists hove
been kidnapped. They are
held in an underground
base and as rhe top pilot
ovoilable you've gor rhe
job. Piloting Airwolf is hard
enough wirhour lazers,
security systems and
machine guns everywhere.
This is of course exactly
whar you're up against
You con fly airwolf around
and blast ar various
hazards with your guns.
There are five scientists in
all, and each is more
difficult ro find than rhe
last.

This game is simply too
hard. The helicoprer is very
difficult ro conrrol with any
degree of accuracy. As
you've only gor one life
rhe game restarts far roo
often. Dated.

"Scooby Doo" finds our
food-loving chum in a bit
of a fix. The resr of rhe
gong have been
kidnapped and are being

held in a creepy old casrle.
Despire being a coward or
heart, Scooby decides ro
go in and rescue rhem.
Our hero has ro jump over
rhe hazards in the casrle
whilsr avoiding rhe
inhabitants.

These rake rhe form of
Scary Ghosr, Ghasrly Ghouls
and Devious Devils. Scooby
can punch rhe baddies on
rhe snout. Even so, Scooby
might find it all too much
were ir nor for rhe Scooby
snacks. These ore scattered
around the castle ar
random and give Scooby
an extra life.

"Scooby Doo" is dared
and ir shows. The graphics,
whilsr large, are clumsy
and lacklustre. Punching
ghosts on the nose is okay
for a few minutes bur ir
soon polls. 5cooby can
quickly lose lives because
rteghosrs remarerialize
very suddenly.

"Battleships" is the
classic game of seek and
desrroy. Ir is usually played
by two players. However
there is a one player versus
rhe computer and a
league option. Each player
has his own water space.
He places his ships secretly
and rhen the players rake
it in rurns ro shoor
randomly. The winner is
rhe person who skins rheir
opponent's ships.

This game appears
more polished than rhe
orhers onthe compilation.
The graphics are interesting
as well as functional and
rhe shooting phase is a
nice oddirion. The game is
one that you'll either love
or hate. This is a gome rhor
rhe whole family can
enjoy and I recommend ir.

In "Saboteur", you are
q man with a mission.
Highly trained in both
armed and unarmed
combat, you have ro
retrieve a disk. This conrains
the names of Rebel
leaders and is, of course,
Top Secret. Not surprisingly,
ir is well -defended. Held in
a top securiry
establishment and
prorecred by guards, dogs

and securiry devices.

You start by landing at
rhe jetty in on inflatable
dinghy. Throughout rhe
complex there are various
weapons to help your
tasks. These include
shuriken, grenades, knives
and bricks. You have ro
find rhe disk and meet rhe
helicoprer on the roof so
rhere's no rime ro spare.

This is another game
that shows its age. The
graphics are indistinct and
the controls ore fiddly. It's
hard ro pick up items and
climb ladders. Although
rhe game is hard ro finish
it's really nor worth trying.

Finally, "Frank Bruno"
lets you play rhe parr of
your favourite
heavyweighr hero. You
musr guide him through his
bid for rhe world firle. He
musr fight eighr opponents
from oil around the world.
Each one has a different
graphic and fighting style.
Also rhey have a dirty rrick
up rheir sleeves; Fling Long
Chop does a flying kick
ond Andra Puncheredov
does a head burr.

Out our Frank is nor
going ro srand for any of
that, Harry. As he punches
his opponents his
punchomerer increases.
When ir becomes
maximum he can unleash
a dynamire punch.
Unfortunarely if Frank gets
hir rhen rhe punchomefer
decreases. Once Frank
defeats an opponenr rhen
he gets a code ond you
have to load in rhe next
boxer.

"Frank Bruno" the
game, is abour as currenr
as his bid for rhe World
Championship roday. The
graphics are extremely
bfocky and rhe gome itself
is frustrating. Control is
awlsward using borh keys
and joysrick. There's srill a
lor of game here for those
who like o challenge. I was
pur off rhough.

Overall the package is
far too dated. There are
many better compilations
available on the marker.

hey're back! The
original ghosrbusrering
I reom return ro save
New York again. After

destruction of rhe Sray-Pufr
Marshmallow Man, rhe
ream disbanded. The
media blew up rhe affair
as a hoax. Sadly, our
heroes have had ro make

Dana Ban-err (alios

ro New York. 5he now has

rhar the forces of evil are

bock. 5he also knows what
ro do abour ir. Who you
gonno coll?

Ghosrbusters of course!
The reol gong of four ore
bock and fighting fir. New
York is in peril from the evil
spirits - freaky phenomena
of all shapes and forms!
The game irself is in rhree
parrs, and rhe first sub-
game sets you the task of
collecting a sample of
slime. To do this o ream
member needs to be
lowered down a shaft by
winch, on rhe way he
encounters slimers, ghosts,
winch-eating blobs and
huge hands.

Luckily, like every good
boy scour, rhe ghosrbusrer
is well prepared, as he has
a choice of three weapons
or his disposal. The usual
proton beams; an energy
shield; and a PK bomb.
The lasers can shoot most
of rhe ghosts, and the
bomb destroys rhe winch-
eaters and flying blobs
easily. As you swing from
side ro side you hove ro
pid< up rhe three ports of
the gloop scoop. These
and replacement
weapons are on ledges on
the sides. Picking these up
is the hardest parr of this

secrion, bur once you've
done this it's onto
Broadway.

Now the team hove to
reoch the orr museum and
ro get rhere before rhe
new year they've
animated the Statue of
Liberty! You have to
protect it from rhe flying
spuds, slimers and ghosts
with but a mere fireball.
This shoots missiles at the
ghosts who, once hit, rum
into drops of slime. Your
loyal group of men con
then run out to pick it up.
This slime then adds ro
your energy, which is
reduced when hit.

This section of rhe
game is rough to
complete with hoards of
ghosts swooping into the
arrack. These are all well
drawn and animated.
Control of the fireball is
simple and effecrive.

The final section of rhe
game is at the musuem.
You have ro rescue Oscar
and destroy something
colled "Vigo the

Carpathian". You starr by
abseiling in from the roof.
It is another blosring
section, and is also hard to
ploy.

Ghostbusters II is fairly
well programmed. I liked
the opening sequences
which included digitized
graphics from the film. The
ghost graphics were rhe
besr (and most amusing).
Unfortunately, the game
will foil down on it's lasting
inreresr because rhe
challenge is too
insubstantial. Having said

rhot, ir is fun for o while. A
score of some kind would
have added inreresr. As ir
stands, the only incentive
to ploy is ro complete ir,
and nor too many people
will find that difficult. One
for kids only.

CHASE H.

Supplier: OCEAN
Price: £9.99 (Tope)

r seems Thar crime
is poying more often
these days, because rhe
bad guys ro be seen with
are driving Ferraris,
Lamborginis and Lotus'.
This would make catching
them impossible for your
run-of-the-mill police
cruiser or Panda cor. so at
Chase H.Q. rhe law-
enforcers are given a
Turbo charged Porsche
926 instead.

At chase H.Q.. no-one
evershours "PULL OVER!"
to a criminal he's got to
be forced off the rood in
true James Bond style. The
difficulty of this task varies
according ro rhe level but
then who said that being a
speed cop was going to
be easy?

Whilst chasing rhe
criminal you hove to
negotiate forks in rhe road,
road signs and rhe orher
rood-users (who actually
obey rhe speed limit) and
all against the clock. You
ore given sixty seconds to
track him down. Crashing
into orher cars or roadside
obsrocles couses a
catastrophic loss of speed
(and time). Taking a
wrong rurn in the road
more or less ruins your
chances of catching him as
well.

If you finally catch up
with the boddie, you ore
given a further sixty
seconds to run him off the
road. Ir's here that your
Turbo comes in handy.
Government funds being
what they ore. irs use is
limited to three per gome.
Once ocrivared, you
accelerate to speeds of
over 300mp/h which gives
you a definore edge! You

then have ro collide
forcibly wirh rhe back of
the rogue driver's cor. Each
rime you do this
successfully a hit is
recorded. A gauge records
rhe number of hits left
before submission. Once
the criminal submits, Nancy
at H.Q. then gives you
details of the next mission.

As o gome. Chase H.Q,
breaks very little new
ground. The idea of
running a car off rhe rood
is not new now is the
perspective view from
above and behind your
car. The car responds foirly
well ro speed and inertia,
so screaming around a
corner at 300mp/h is a
bod idea! The graphics
work fairly well with a
good impression of an
uneven road created. The
impression of speed is not
so good, and the whole
game seems to advance
in slow motion, rhe gome
. plays well enough, but is
perhaps o little too easy
despite rhe time limit.

There is average music
on the title page but only
engine sound fx during the
gome. There is no high-

score rable but there is a
high score recorded.
Ramming rhe car off is rhe
hardest part of the gome,
but once mastered you'll
hove no rrouble
complering rhe game. At
The end you are given a
ranng from "Get a new
job" to "Expert" which is, at
first ar leosr, amusing.

And that's it. Nothing is
particularly wrong wirh
Chase H.Q. but is seems to
lock the polish it needs to
lift it above rhe glut of
driving games on the
marker. And wirh only five
levels, I have serious
doubts abour irs lasting
inferest.^^

Flippo is-a small,
round thing with legs.
Life as a small, round
rhing wirh legs would be
very boring if ir were nor
for the mazes of rhe Upper
Plane. These are jolly good
fun ro be in. For one rhing,
every time Flippo rakes a
step he mokes rhe
flagstone which he's
treading on flip over. This
often changes its colour ro
anorher bright shade.

Flippo is blissfully happy
when he's rearing around
rhe mazes, flipping loads
of paving stones over.
Sadly, there ore other
Inhabiranrs of rhe planes
who hove nothing better
ro do than drain Flippo's
energy. These rake several
nasty forms bur none are
as cure as Flippo.

Also deadly ro Flippo's
healrh are rhe gaps in rhe
maze. These ore gaps in
rhe Upper plane and if
fallen through our hero
dies. This is preferable ro
life in rhe inner space
below. Luckily, Flippo
could give Olympic long
jumpers training and can
leap over rhe gaps. He
can even turn in mid air!

Some of rhe squares
turn over a differenr colour
ro rhe resr. These are
squares that need to be
run over from a differenr
direction. Flippo ofren has
ro backtrack in order to
change these again.

Occasionally, Flippo
encounters icons floating
around rhe maze. These
give him Temporary
immuniry ro the monsters
ond in some coses another
life. 5hould Flippo turn oil
the squares rhe right colour
he has ro find the portal.
This is a flashing square
which transports him to rhe
nexr maze.

The graphics are
represenred from above in
forced perspective. The
borders of rhe maze are
varied according ro rhe
level. Each is colourful and
well drawn. Flippo himself
is o nicely done character;
short ond for and blue. The
monsrers in rhe maze vary
from excellenrly ro poorly
drown ond animated.
Some ore large and
colourful; others are small
and blurry. They seem ro
move randomly obour rhe
maze bur it's easy ro be
trapped by them.

The game is very
playable and fairly
addictive. Ir has gor
enough frusrrarion ro keep
you playing rarher rhan
annoying you. Should you
progress through a level
rhere is a resrart option
which functions rwice in
any one game. The levels
are fairly rough, wirh each
one raking up several
screens. These are flip-
screen rarher than scrolling.

Having said rhor, I feel
rhor Hewson have raken o
few sreps back wirh Maze
Mania. Ir is a cross between
Pacmania and Q*Dert
(remember that?). Maze
games are the definition
of unoriginality and rhis
one is no exceprion. Hippo
has rhe cute porenriol ro
be o culr figure. Our I doubr
rhar rhis game will be
successful enough ro
warrant a sequel. The truth
is that there are far too
many games of this type
available already. Many of
them ore better rhon rhis
one roo. Unless you hove
money ro burn or you are
a real fan of maze games
rhen rry before your buy.

These all make blasting

getting Ara rhar much
more simple. Also for sale
are weapons rhar can be
snapped ro your fisr. This fisr
weapon is used Robocop
style, ro punch our the
aliens when you are
walking along the planet's
surface.

Colliding wirh aliens
drains rhe energy from
your shield. You srorr wirh
five shields; one is lost if rhe
energy reaches zero.
Helpfully an extra shield is
awarded wirh every
20,000 points. As well as
rhis, an alien occasionally
drops cTPOV symbol. If
collecred, you have a
bonus shield which cannot
be replenished but you do
nor lose a life if it is
depleted.

It would be nice if life
were as simple as that. Bur
you still hove a whole
Universe ro save, nor just

reacror ducts. As you punch
robots on rhe ground,
occasionally one drops o
planer busrer. Once
primed, ir can be carried
down rhe shaft and

Once all of rhe ducrs have

means rhar you cannor

f you've ever fancied
canoeing down some of
the most dangerous
rivers in the world, bur
were scared off by the risto
involved, perhaps you'd
rorher try if in a rubber
rube?! That's rhe challenge
rhor "Toobin" offers you in
this arcade conversion
from Domark

As either Biff or jer, you
must paddle down rivers
and rapids. Your rube does
nor puncture on rocks, you
just bounce off. 5torting at
the top of rhe river, you
hove to negotiate your
way to rhe parry ot rhe
other end. As if this were
nor dangerous enough,
rhere are many added
dangers along rhe way.
These include fly
fishermen, water snakes, a
hungry oligaror and sub-
aqua coctusC?). All of these
hazards puncture your
rube and lose you a life.

On top of all these
dangers, there are anti-
50Ciol party poopers along
the river bonks. These will
try everything in their
power to stop Biff and Jet
from obtaining their goal.
Fortunately, you are not
defenceless. Beer cans can
be collected en route
which you can throw or rhe
various enemies which line
rhe river bank, stunning
them for long enough for
you to escape past them.
There ore also rapids which
rush you quickly down the
vertically scrolling screen
and gates which award
bonus points if successfully
negotiated.

Propulsion is achieved
in the time-honoured
fashion of frantically

paddling with your hands
eirher bodwards or
forwards, and rotating left
or right with your feet. This
is a frustrating mode of
control, which is very easy
to misjudge.

This would be all very
well, but rhe game is
utterly let down by its
graphics. The Toobe5 "Biff'
and "Jet" look like
warerboatmen and some
of the riverside enemies
are entirely

indistinguishable from rhe
background; rhe ones you
can see include several
harpooning 5phinx(??),
and the fly fishermen
resemble disjointed
Legomen. Some of rhe
objects you collect look
like beds of nails,
tangerines and shuriken.

Some of the hazards
are almost impossible to
avoid, as rhe scrolling often
hides them until you're on
rop of them. Add to this
rhe fiddly control system,
which often gets you stuck
on o gate and eaten by
the aligator, and you'll
soon be headbutting the
keyboard in frustration.

I remember seeing this
game in the arcode, and
its attraction was irs
colourful graphics. Domark
have unfortunately foiled
to convert them with any
degree of accuracy, ond
so the game loses its
"cure" appeal. Apparently
Biff and Jer ore "in search
of the most outrageous
parry they can find." Six
old-age pensioners
drinking lemonade and
dancing ro rhe Birdy 5ong
would doubtless be more
entertaining than this dire
effort.

There is a rwo-player
option for the brave, but I
doubr if anyone would
dare show this to their
friends, for soke of losing
rhem. This has rhe feel ro
me of an arcade
conversion which has been
rushed out to coincide with
other versions. There is no
excuse for this. Avoid rhis
game.

- who said rhar simulations

Of course there is a

flares and extra fuel ranks.

When equipped, you
then have ro toxi your way
out of the hanger. Even
this comparatively simple

easy. Ir requires o very

Back in rhe air, and

rhe mission, and may be
as simple as rhe position of

Alrernatively ir could be a

Depending on your

enable your combar

This helps you ro plan your

Of course rhe enemy

of rhe nicks in rhe book
and will use rhem

all you budding rop guns

of rhe book.

This is rhe flight manual.
Ir's essentially ^The ABC of
howro fly an F-16".
Included in rhis hallowed
romb is a derailed
breakdown of rhe various
rypes of missile. This is very
useful as ir helps ro plan
your arming of rhe plane.
There are sections derailing
raking off ond landing,

procedures. These are
especially useful ond are
worth practising. Even if
you can'r perform a
reverse slam loop wirh
twisr. it'll impress your
friends if you say you can!

The book is well
produced and written. If
you don'r read ir before
raking off ir's like wiring a
plug without knowing
which wire is live. Certainty
the missions are far harder
without the essential

background knowledge.
The missions con oil be
alrered ro suir your skill
level. If you have the
indinarion you can litter
rhe map with tanks but
don't expect to complete
the mission easily.

The plane isn't at all
discriminate abour how
you wrire ir off. Whether

you scrape rhe rop of rhe
control tower or rake a
missile in rhe backside rhe
screen shatters. All fhar
hord work down the drain.
Luckily you can srarr all
over again on a differenr
mission.

F-16 Combar Pilot is o
milestone in Commodore
programming. Despire rhe

program's huge size and
complexity the speed
does not suffer. There are
thirty-three controls
including the more
obscure; ejector seat, fuel
and weapons dump and
autopilot. Cramming all of
rhese inro the '64 whilst
reraining the gameplay
and speed is a true
achievement. Digiral
Inregrarion should be
proud of rhis efforr when
they could so easily have
bodged out a conversion
as other do.

Supplier: Virgin Masteitronic

Nothing brings rhe
family rogerher on
those cruel winrer
evenings berrer than a
good old fashioned board
game. The problem lies in
rhose cruel winter evenings
spent olone. There ore two
solutions to this problem,
one is to become a
psychoparh ond develop a
few extra personalities and
the other is to buy the
Leisure Genius 3 Pack from
Virgin Mastertronic.

Three board games
are presented in their
pixelared splendour for
your delectation; Cluedo,
Scrabble De Luxe and
Monopoly. All three games
have previously been
released but this is the first
rime rhar they hove been
presented in a single
pad<age and for the paltry
sum of £.19.99.

The first game to fall
under my scrutiny is
Ouedo. The essence of rhe
original board game has
been preserved with o few
minor additions as only a
computer can do it. Mien
rhe characters appear
ready for their trip around
the board a fiffle dirty is
played which corresponds
ro rhe current character.

All of the participating
characters can be under
either human or computer
control. Ir is even possible
ro select the intelligence

level of eoch computer
controlled character. A
number of oprions are
presented ro rhe player
each turn. It is possible ro
make the final accusation,
a simple suggestion or
review rhe cards you hold.
There is also a notes option
which displays the notes
rhe compurer
auromarically makes for
you character as the game
progresses.

The graphical
representation of the
board occupies rwo thirds

of rhe screen wirh rhe
remaining third displaying
the current character and a
list of oprions. The only
disadvantage of this gome
occurs when more than
one human player is
playing. When you view
your notes or cards you
must cover a portion of the
screen so rhe other players
do nor goin an unfair
advantage when they see
your cards.

Monopoly is a classic
board gome and this is a
classic conversion.

MONOPOLY

Gameplay in rhe
compurer version is
identical to that of the
board version. Once again
there is the problem of
covering port of the screen
to view your cords bur
apart from that this is a fun
conversion. For the single
or limired group of players
it is possible ro have a
number of compurer
conrrolled characters eoch
wirh o user defined IQ.

The race around rhe
board holds rhe familiar
rhrills as rhe mad dash for
rhe expensive properties
begins. One advanrage of
rhe compurer version is
rhar you will lose none of
rhe cards and rhe
compurer handles all rhe
banking funaions. a blow
ro rhose slighr of hand
playera.

The problem wirh
playing only ogainsr
compurer conrrolled
choracrers is rhar you
cannor see them sweat as
rhe dice rolls and they
approach your horels. Ar
least you con ser rhe
compurer characters ro rhe
lowest level and give
rhem o severe rhrashing.

The final game in this
selection is 5aabble De
Luxe. This is by for rhe
easiesr and mosr playable
of rhe conversions.
Although you con see
each orher's lerters this
does not unduly disrupt rhe

gome. There ore rhe usual
options fo have a number
of computer controlled
players with an IQ of your
choice but there are also
several features which odd
significantly to the game.

The computer version
of the gome neatly
eliminates those obscure
two letter words by
checking entry against irs
in-built dictionary. Those
words is does nor
recognise it queries, but
the human player can
override this and thus
cheat. For those players
that find it hard to srring
two sentences together a
help option is available.
When activiared this option
finds The best possible use
for the letters you hold. A
rack full of tiles can at
rimes bring little inspiration
so. to help the struggling
player rhe riles can be
randomly juggled in order
to bring forth that elusive
combination. Further
options allow the players
to place a limit upon the
thinking time and access
charts showing rile and
board values.

This is one computer
version that plays equally
well despite the number of
players and if a player
drops out the computer
can always take over.

One fun aspect of all
these games is rhe ability
ro switch to a completely
computer controlled gome
ot any time. If the
outcome cannot be
waited for, moke every
character a compurer
controlled character, set
rhe game speed to
maximum and go moke
a cup of tea.

As a package this
selection represents
excellent value. Although
each of rhe games support
a number of human
participants only Scrabble
De Luxe really works with
more than one human
player. This is simply a
solitary socio! event of the
yeat.

Tesr Drive II: The
Duel" is rhe sequel
ro Accolade's very
successful driving simulator.
Whilst the first game was
more of a simulation. The
Duel is much more of a
race game. However This
does nor mean that the
quality of the driving has
suffered. It's just rhar the
emphasis is more on fun in

this version.

Having a grey Porsche
has made you friends and
enemies. One of these
drives a red Lambourgini
and has challenged you to
a race. Nor wishing to lose
credibility you rise to the
challenge.

On loading you are
given several options. Doth
cars are displayed with a

derailed description 61
each beside. Here you can
choose which car ro drive.
Each has irs pros and cons
bur rhey're roughly equal
in performance. You can
choose ro rake on rhe Duel
srraight away, or eirher
pracrice or race against the
clock. As with any pseudo
realistic game it's worth a
pracrice befote jumping in
at the deep end.

The clock is a fairly hard
game which should set
you up for the main
challenge. This starts wirh

you sitting in front of your
opponent. You can see
him in your rear view
mirrors, he's obviously
confident enough ro give
you a head start! Along rhe
rood (Speed Limir 55mph?
Ho!) you'll encounrer other
drivers. These merely serve
to obsrrucr you as you race.
Hirring one of rhese makes
you lose one of your five
lives.

' You have ro refuel at

opponent is o meon driver
ond will try ro force on
error from you in order to
win. There ore many skill
levels including a choice of
manual or automatic
transmission. At the higher
levels the enemy
becomes meaner and
faster than ever. He
weaves about in front of
your car. trying to get you
ro crash. The other cars are
more frequenr and cause
more trouble for you.

It's very easy ro miss a
gear change at a crucial
moment and lose the
Duel. Understandably this
leads to a distinct loss of
street credibility. Of course
you must re-challenge
your adversary, in the
hope that you con bear
him this time...

The Duel is a very good
driving gome come
simulation. It's hard
enough ro keep conrrol of
a performance car without
the added worry of o race.
The graphics are updated
well ond smoothly and the
perspective effect is
successful. The game is
very reminiscent of Test
Drive and as such is nor as
stunning as it could be.

However if you don'r
own Test Drive or would

rather be racing than on
the run cheds our The Duel.
It might be what you're
looking for. On its own
merits this game is very
good indeed, is fun ro play
and sufficiently difficult to
keep you playing for some
hours. Driving freaks should

The original "Ghosts
and Goblins" featured
our Knight in shining
armour. He had a quest; to
rescue his kidnapped lady
from the clutches of evil.
Wei!, guess what? Arthur
the Knight is back. Guess
what he has to rescue
the Princess HusC?) from
the clutches of evil. Ho
hum. You'd have thought
that Arthur would have
found something different
ro do after three years.

Srill. a Knight has to do
what a Knight has to do.
Arthur is kitted our (as
before) in his suit of parenr
baddy-bashing armour.
This disappears if he is hit.
Arthur then has onty his
underpants for protection.
He has a silver lance (oo-
er!) with which he can slice
the nasties into kebabs. As
Arthur runs across the
barren scenes of depravity
and evil he encounters
chests. Shooting these
reveals either a secret
weapon or a magician.
The seaer weapons range
from knives ro magical
bombs. These can far
more easily destroy the
nasties then the lance.

The magicians are
faceless men in vampire
costumes. These are
deadly ro the rouch, bur
cast a spell on you. This
turns you into a duck for
abour five seconds. This
can be useful if you need
ro avoid lots of nasties as
you're far smaller. When
you turn back info Arthur
your armour is replenished.

Life is nor oil plain
sailing for Arthur. After all,
there is rhe little marter of

A Run little metal man!

AHack, chop and hack again.

A If s Hmes like this I wish I hadnl
thrown away my tin opener!

the nasties he has ro
despatch. These vary from
The Grimreaper ro flying
Tasmantan Devils. All of
them cause damage ro
Arthur. Other sraric hazards

include collapsing floors,
guillotines and skull
throwing fires. At rhe end
of each level Arthur
encounters a huge
Demonic monster. This is

fierce and shoots fireballs
at Arthur. 5hould Arthur
srab him enough rimes
with his weapon then he
con progress ro the next
evel.

The third level gives
Arthur a change of task. He
now sronds on a floating
platform. As it rises up a
shafr he is beset by yet
more nasties. Giant Knights
crawl out of the walls to
hounr him. Bats fly around
and drop blobs onto him.
Ghouls snap at him with
giant pairs of scissors! This
level makes a nice change
from the horizonrally
scrolling orher levels.

"Ghouls and Ghosts" is
not a particularly brilliant
game at all. Not much
imagination has been put
into the characters or rhe
backgrounds. Arthur is as
blocky as he was in rhe first
game all rhar rime ago.
The monsters ore nor badly
drawn bur srill aren't
fantastic. Ir is quite difficult
ro shoor across the screen;
Arthur rends ro shoot up by
mistake.

This aside, "Ghouls and
Ghosts" is a playable
game. Ir has good
addictive qualifies and is a
nice shoot em up. The
extra weapons are a fun if
fairly ineffective addition
to the game. The game
has terrific music which
partly makes up for its
orher shortcomings. My
advice is ro try before you
buy.

as o touchdown you can

A Football's a game for big butch men named after kitchen

Accept it, if s the only thing you'll get? A

This scores three points but srraregy you can assume

is berrer than losing rhe

You have four arremprs

This is known as a firsr
down. Fail this and the
possession turns over ro rhe
other ream. This also
happens if rhe ball is
dropped or a pass is
intercepted by an
opposing player.

John Madden Football
is a superb game. It has
captured all of rhe subrle
complexities of what is a
very complicared and
involved sport. For those of
you who like an arcade

This scores six points. The
kicker then has a chance
ro score the extra point by
booting the ball over rhe
goalposts. (Niall Quinn
would be good at it then -
Ed). The game is very
much a physical contact
sport. The teams ore all
kitted our in pods and
helmets to avoid injury.

This sounds quire
simple, but rhe gome is
also very subrle too. There
ore many different
variations on rhe basic pass
or running ploys. These are
all named, including
"shotgun", "pocket" and

Oh no, his balls are dropped. A

control of the players on
screen. The graphics ore
fairly well defined but a
lime blocky. This means
that it is sometimes very
difficult to see what's going
on. However the same is
true of rhe real sport so it's
excuseable of the
compurer version.

The packaging is very
extravagant. There is a
handbook, two pamphlets
which individually derail
offensive ond defensive
plays and a "season
ticket". This is a revolving
card disk which contoins
codes ro access rhe
program ond discourage
piracy. The books ore well
written and concise with
clear instructions and step
by step guides ro ploy.

This is not a game
where you can sit down
and enjoy it instantly. You
have to understand the
sport first. Then you have to
undersrond rhe program. It
works extremely well once
you suss our rhe way it is
structured. Then you'll be
absolutely hooked. You
won't be able to drag
yourself away from the
screen until you've won a
few key plays. Sure ro be a

I think YC is cool, bur I have a few

1 . Is YC a new name for the old

so Rik tells me). 5. Well over a

6. Anyfing with loads of death in it.

7. Yep. pretty soon!

for three years now, rhor you hove

hove no qualms againsr the printing
of such moreriol as long as ir is done
in a matter that is not offensive.

Unfortunately, although the text
itself was of o very professional
nature, the way in which ir was
presented was in very poor rosre
indeed. The title 'Die Alien Scum'
was completely unnecessary, and in
my mind was only used for the
'Shock' effect that if may have. The
pictures were far too explicit for the
games mag that you have now
seemed to become, and the
alarming array of weaponry that
adorn each page only helps to
glamourise rhe subject matter.

Come on boys, what ore you

Mr. Herst, Tunbridge-Wells

PA: What a pleb! Don't you realise,

pictures serves to soririse the
explidty of the subject matter.
Children must be fed bad imagery
to be able to signify what is right
and wrong. Anyway, what IS wrong
with violins?

PA: Acid House, pah! Nope I'm a
Death, Death, Death and the Deaths

Thankfully, rhe Code Masrers
boys have one they prepared
earlier; a lead ro connect a CD
player ro a 64 and a disc (compact,
natch) ro go wirh ir containing thirty-
four games. What's more it's only
619.95.

How did all rhis happen?
Explains Mike Clark, rhe codies' PR
supremo, "Nobody does anything
original". While moping about this,
Ted Carron, programmer of
International Rugby for rhe 64, was
(says Mike) "given some hardware
ro play wirh which he opened up
and found our how it worked".

A Richard Darling
- Er... David's brother.

"I have a general interest in
technology" says Ted, "with a CD
you can have lots of information
and get or it quickly... it's random
access". Rather bizarrely the system
is "using the 64's speaker ro
playback the CD".

Ted came up not only wirh a
coble but a way of loading games
in around 20 seconds from CD. This
gave Code Masters the idea ro
produce, as David Darling purs ir, "a
compilarion wirh style... rhe besr of
Code Masrers".

They did ir because rhey found
rhor 00-40% of people who buy rhe
Code Masrers games have CDs,
lucky dogs! If rhis compilarion was
released on disk ir would rake or
leasr ten, and rope... ugh.., atl rhar
winding back and forth!

"It's of mosr advantage to 8-bit

users with cassette-based systems"
concedes Richard Darling. "The C64
version actually has rhe edge", says
Mike, "we all love the machine"
(that's enough fawning to 64
owners!).

Being o rarher technical chappie,
Ted demonstrared how ir worked,,.
You plug one end of the cable into
rhe CD player's headphone socket
and rhe other into rhe joystick port.
Because of a huddle of components
at one end of rhe special coble, rhe
64 con understand the CD - even
better after playing in a small
loader program from rhe disc.

To get a game, you just select
rhe required rrads (game) and...
whizzo! There ir is! If you press
"Restore", you just need to select
another track and rhar begins ro
load.

"If you have rhis cable, you're
going ro find ir very useful" says
Mike, mysteriously. 'Ther could be
any number of speical products in
rhe furure. Bigger games, huge
mulriloads, endless capacity for
secret sub-gomes and hidden
levels... fantastic possibilities". For
insrance, he sees no reason why

54 < YC

rhere couldn'r be q reol Dragon's
Loir for The 64 on a CD - "anyrhing
that relies on massive arnounrs of
srorage would be o cinch" he
boosts.

None of rhis explains a
mysterious "research mission" ro rhe
Far East. "Richard and Ted
announced they were going to
Toiwan" recalls Mike, "they said they
were staying for four days." They
ended up staying for three weeks!
What did they do? Maybe rhe
company might accept answers on
a postcard in a return for o CD pad<?
Maybe nor.

Review 'n' rating

To review every one of this
staggering amount of gomes is a

and
CO

Herculean task. So, I'm not going to
do it. (You're no Hercules, are you? :
Ed). As CM's Mike Clark pur it, M lr
would be difficult to recommend
one game as devastatingly
outstanding given that there are so
many good games on it."

There ore some real corkers on if.
ATV Simulotot (a great cross-country
buggy gome for two players) is
probably one of the best, if not rhe
best. Mike explained how fast if was
- "fifty frames a second, the fastest
you con update it" ■ but then he
wrote rhe game!

There's also Pro Ski Simulator
(another great two-player game,
this rime full of on-piste action),
Treasure Island Dizzy (an arcade-
adventure puzzle gome for
eggheads) and Four Soccer
Simulators (er, four footle games).

Tor those up and what do you
get (scribble, scribble), - nearly €19
just for those four. And there's
another twenty games on the CD -
omazing!

For on incredible 59p a game
you can't really go wrong. You also

get fast loading and a mega-useful
lead,

I can see only one disadvantage
- you need a CD player!

something Julian is still birrer abour.

His fiisr games - Timelords,

After rhar, he wenr ro Gomes

Laser Squad and will be publishing

Lords of Chaos has a simple
concept. There are Cup ro eighr)
wizards who hove ro compere for
victory points and, offer one 'Vins"
must disappear inro o portal ro win
rhe gome. A player accrues points
by finding objecrs, killing rhe orher
wizards (magically, of course) G
Their crearions and casring spells.

Which is where ir gets fun. Players
aeare crearures by casring certain
spells. The harder rhe spell, rhe more
ir cosrs ro casr and rhe more
incredible a crearure is likely ro be.
It's all dependent on "Mono" which
is rhe magical power of rhe wizard.
This goes down when o spell is cast
but can be rejuvenated by some of
rhe objecrs lying around.

Georure spells srarr with rhe
lowly Gianr Bar (worse rhan
pathetic), go rhrough, amongsr
many others, Dwarves, Dears,
harpies. Zombies, Vampires, all rhey
way up ro rhe mosr powerful
creorures of all - dragons - which
come in Green, Red, and Gold, rhe
most powerful of all.

The ore also a variety of other
spells: projectile spells like magic
lighrning; rerrain spells such os rhe
Tangle Vine, Flood, Fire, or Gooey
Blob which advance across rhe
landscape like rhe Red Weed in
War of rhe Worlds; and more
intangible spells such as Subversion
(of orher players' creatures).

The conflict is played our on a
wide expanse of rerrain (which you
con scroll around or see on a "big
map") which is covered in wizards'
srrongholds, chests, objecrs, swamp,
foresr and, by rhe rime the gome
has got going, loads of pseudo-3D
crearions, trampling around rhe
map picking things up and hitting
each orher.

"Every gome will be different, it's
mindboggling" says Julian. He's
righr, roo.

'lords of Chaos" will be released
by Blade Software or Eosrer for rhe
Commodore 64.

Lasr monrh I think I promised
news of rhe follow-up ro Chase HQ

obour ir?

Well, ir takes up exactly where

Special Criminal Investigations

rally than any orher on rhe
international race calendar? Ir's quire
surprising rhen rhar rhe game
doesn'r involve trying ro run people
down - you jusr have ro drive fasr!

Conrrols are simple - occelleroror
pedal, hi/low gears and sreering
wheel, wirh you making your way
through the vorious srages of rhe
event - storting in rhe bright lights of
Paris, but soon enrering rhe rugged
Terrain of the Sahara. Although rhe
implementation is good - rhe
graphics are nice and the scrolling
and sprite scaling smooth enough -
if has to be said that the game is a
little lacking in the originality stakes.
Still, if you are into driving yourself,
it'll be worth having a go ro see if
you agree with me.

If you're not into driving, then
maybe it's more action you're

tractor things rhar you see quire
often in these action events like 'Run
the Gaunrief'. Take if from me, they
are fantastic fun ro ride in real life -
and now Namco has given you rhe
chance ro find out for yourself in a
game called Four Trax.

It comes in o double unit, so you
con ply head to heod against a
friend - as you sit down on the
bike's saddle and rev rhe rhrortte
wide open. Spin those wheels, drift
across those corners, foil over those
straw bales! Great sruff! Expert to see
loads of these about rhis year.

One you won't see too much of,
bur is worthy of note, is a game
from o company colled Gottlieb.
Renowned for irs pinball machines,
rhe Dig G has suddenly released a
deeply weird game - Exterminator.

Utilising largely digitised graphics,
you control a disembodied hand
which has to clear rooms of rather
unusual infestations. Like borrallions
of roy ranks, which have a tendency
to fire bock, for example.

You have three weapons; your
hand can stamp down on the floor
directly below you (so crushing
anything underneath), grab
something out of the ait or direct a
beam of purple energy across the
room, as directed.

While all rhis is going on you
have ro watch for flying objects, like
rhe Wasp. Try grabbing him and
your hand will throb in agony as if
sfings you.

Deeply surreal, you mighr not
enjoy playing rhis frankly bizzare
game but on the other hand - you
mighr. For something completely
different, try it!

What's green, got 4 legs, is 1 5
years old and would take your
Nunchakus off as soon as look at
you. What else but A teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtle? Yup, rhe cartoon
that put rhe 'Cow' back inro ^Puchka'

is now coming ro an arcade near
you.

Basically a four player (yes, four
player) martial arts bash, it's quite a
bit of fun when Raphael, Leonardo,
Donatello and Michaelangelo get
into action against rhe bad guys.
Lightweight, but OK, if there's a
crowd of you our for a giggle.

DataEast has come up wirh
some goodies larely. Robocop for
example ond more recently, Secret
Agent. Now comes another rhar is
likely ro be very successful for rhem,
Midnighr Resistance.

Relarively small sprires here, bur
rhe conrrol is interesting, using a
rorory joysrick. Ir moves eight ways in
rhe usual manner, ro move your
central character, bur the knob on
top also rotates to direct your line of
fire. So you can be running one way
and firing in the orher. Very sensible.

Eminently ployable - even when

I hope that the above rourine is of
some use ro you. and that it helps
you with your coding.

Dear Miles,

I am currently wriring myself o
simple machine code monitor I
hove tried coding a rourine rhor
when inpured with a hex number
will read off from rhe memory
location inputed, and display rhe
content as hex bytes. The problem I
am hoving is converting the contents
of the memory location to screen
codes. Would you please explain
how ir should be done?
Marli Jackson, Newcastle

Dear Mark,

Thanks for writing to me with your
question, and I am pleased to tell
you that I do have the answer, and
very easy ir is too. Quite simply,
whot you hove to do is LOAD the
accumulator with the hex value,
AND it with 00001 1 1 1 leaving you
with a value from 0 to 1 5. Check to
see if the value is 1 0 or greater- if
so. then subtract 9 (giving you a
letter from A-F. If rhe value is 0-9
then add 48 giving you a number
from 0-9). Now store the contents of
the accumulator at. say. 1025 (Dec).

this putring a number of letter on
the screen (top left). Now re-lood
the accumulator with the original
HEX value. This time rotate the
accumulator four places to the right,
then AND it with 00001 111. Once
again check if the value is greater or
less than 1 0. Store rhe A reg. or, say,
1024 (Dec). Now you should see
the original hex value as two screen
codes.

Deor Miles,

Afrer reading your article on roster
routines in YCs sister magazine
(Commodore Disk User), I wanted to
find out two points regording raster
bars.

1 . Is a so-called Vertically split' roster
bor a genuine raster bar?

2. If rhe above question is yes', then
could you explain how such an
effect is done?

J. Summers, Scotland

Dear Mr, Summers,
Let me start by answering your first
question: a vertically split roster
colour bar is a reol roster colour bar,
and isn't done using some form of
bitman or colour cheat. The way
that it is done is fairly simple but
involves extremely careful and

precise riming. After experimenting,
I found that the best method was to
blank out the screen by POKEing
53265 to 0. The next procedure is
to latch onto the desired raster line
where you want the colour bar ro
start.

Now read off a colour into the
accumulator and store ar 53280.
You should be able to do this
around seven times, then there will
be one raster line wirh seven splits
of on. Keep doing this for rhe
amount of raster lines you want to
covet.

The reason I rurned off the
screen is because if allows you the
same amount of cycles to every
raster line (unlike when the screen is
on).

I am sorry rhat I can't give you a
listing, but it would fake up mosr of
the page. I hope rhat rhe
information is of some help to you.

I hope that answers your
question. I checked an old rourine I
had for doing rhe above and if
worked O.K., so you shouldn't have
any trouble doing a similar one
yourself.

Q: What does The Sun
hove in common wirh
computer gomes?
A. Poge 3 girls.

aria Whirraker, Sam Fox
and Corinne Russell have all
mode their appearance in
software adverts, in strip poker
gomes, on inlays and posters in
typically scanty attire. Page 3
publicity sells papers and ir sells
computer games. But should if? MP
Gare Short is already heading the
battle to ban Page 3 morerial from
our daily papers, and the
Organisation Against Sexism In
SolWare (OASIS) has been set up to
try to combat similar issues in
computer games. So what's all the
fuss about? Is rhere really any harm
in showing off o bit of pixellated
flesh or ore the onri-sexism
campaigners just getting rheir
knickers in a twist?

If there's anything designed to
get people's blood boiling, it's sex. Ir
gets more people upright and
irritated than the National Health
Service and water privatisation put
together. Everybody's got an
opinion about ir and given half a
chance they'll ram if down your
rhroar. Computers can'r kiss or wear
a condom so you might think they
haven't got oil that much to do with
if, but there you're wrong. Sex and
gender affect everyone and
everything - and games are no
exception.

The main points of argumenr are
easy ro spor. For something to be
sexist it's gor ro discrimate against
women purely on rhe grounds of
their gender. Thar means rhar
anything which portrays women as
less intelligent or capable than men
simply because they ore women is
a definite no-no. The same goes for
portraying them as if rhe only thing
that's interesting about rhem is rhe
way rhey look. You know rhe gen:
nice body, shome abour rhe brain.

Start looking and a lor of game
packaging and advertising starts ro
appear decidedly iffy. Flick through
a few back issues of Your
Commodore and you'll find more
rhan a couple of ads sporting a
picture of a sexy blonde not overly
endowed in the clorhes

62 < YC

department. More often than nor
there's just a subtle hint of sexuoliry -
like the female tennis player's
undies peeking out from beneath
her skirt in the ad for Passing Shot -
but every now and again someone
releases an ad which is so overt it
causes something of o stir.
Remember Psycho Pigs UXD? On the
strength of rhe gameplay nobody
would; rhe ad which featured an
almost topless model stretched out
on a billboard was far more
memorable. Or how about Corinne
Russell posing aggressively in
supposedly kinky mock-leopard skin
bikini plus leather whip on rhe cover
of Marrech's Vixen? Boots refused to
sell it with a full-size picture of
Corinne on the front, so Martech had
ro publish a special head and
shoulders version jusr for them.

Products like Sam Fox Snip Poker
of Maria's Christmas Box aren't
exactly aimed at furthering the
cause of women's lib either. On the
64 rhey don't even flarter rhe eye
very much. However interesting you
might find Sam Fox in rhe flesh,
there has to be a limit to rhe
ririllation afforded by a pair of
blocky, low resolution breasts.

Even without bouncing breasts
and naughty knickers, a lor of
games hardly go our of their way ro
show women in a positive light. For
example, have you ever thought
about the goals of games like
Vigilante or Savage? Some feeble
little girly totally incapable of
looking after herself has got into a
pickle and is just deperote for her
macho, hard-man boyfriend to
come and help her out. Doesn't
reinforce your confidence in the
independence of rhe 'fairer' sex,
does it?

Harmless fun? Well, it's unlikely to
harm anyone physically. The
argument that page 3 girls are
direaiy linked with rhe violent
sexual abuse of women is pretty
tenuous. As long as you're a healthy
law-abiding individual in rhe first
place, looking at o pic of Corinne
Russell topless or in a bikini isn't
going to make you go out and rape
someone. Even if you can establish
a definite connection between rope
and page 3 in a specific incident,
that wouldn't be a valid enough
reason for banning it. It's like saying
that because John Hindsley, the
man who fried ro shoot Ronald
Reagan, was obsessed with Jodie
Foster, all her movies should be
scrapped.

My pretty, pretty! A

Joysticks and ►
lipsticks.

A Strip by numbers.

That's obvious. But there are
more subtle ways in which games
can undermine the role of women.
Close your eyes for a second and
picture a page 3 girl. Ten to one, rhe
first thing you think about isn't her
brainpower. If society placed men
and women on a totally equal
footing it wouldn't make the
blindest bir of difference. For every
page 3 girl, rhere'd be a page 7
fella somewhere else. Nobody
would think the girl a slag for posing
in the nude any more than they'd "
think badly of the bloke.

But right now that's not rhe way
things work. Like it or not, society still
makes it harder for women to
succeed than men. There's still a
tendency ro assume that women
are less capable of rational thought.
Girls aren't encouraged ro do
sciences or school and employers
often discriminate agoinsf women
when they're handing our jobs. Most
of our MPs are men; over 50% of the
population rhey represent is female.

Anything which depicts women
in an inferior role reinforces thot
inequality whether ir's comics, TV.
films or computer games. The
question is, should we be trying to
stop it? On the one hand, taking a
few bikinis off rhe front of a plastic
box isn't going to change people's
attitudes. But then, it just goes to
show how little respect one half of
the population has for the other if

rhey only find rhem inreresring when
They're wearing a g-string. You moy
think rhe view rhaf women belong
in rhe kitchen is outdated bur every
rime you buy a produa with a sexisr
slant, you're adding another link to
rhe chain which binds rhem to rhe
kirchen sink.

Whatevet you rhink of rhe moral
argument, there's another by-
product to all this. Nudge-nudge
advertising aimed at lads excludes
most girls from the gomes scene. At
school, computing is considered a
boys' subject, at home rhe brothers
get rhe 64s and rhe sisters get rhe
proms; ar worts women use word
processors, blokes become the
engineers. If a girl ever gets ro take
a look at o game or a magazine
everything about it is designed to
put them off.

Personally, I don't rhink there's
ony reason why girls shouldn't enjoy
anything from shoot 'em ups to
adventure games just as much as
boys. The only reason rhey don't is
because they're conditioned to rhink
that a computer won't interest them
and all rhe game blurb rhey ever
encounter just works ro reinforce
that. Maybe if some of rhe adverts
were less one-sided and rhe gome
scenarios had a more uni-sex
approach women's attirudes could
change as well. It won't happen
overnight and if won't happen
without a change in women's
education. But if it does happen it
might actually bring a breath of
fresh air ro software.

One of o minority of software
houses currently attempting to
encourage o non-sexist policy is
Audiogenic. The company's boss,
Peter Calver, reckons that getting
women interested in software could
bring new life into gomes. If
publishers sold more units to all
those extra femole customers they'd
make more money. 'Thar way you
could plough a lot of your profit
back into development and design.
And anything that lets you spend
more rime on game development
has to be good for the industry'.

There's only one reason some
publishers carry on using sexisr
adverts and producing strip poker
gomes: money. Ir sells. Whether your
produce's great or mediocre ir
stands to shift a few more units if
there's a blonde in o mini-skirt on
the front. As for the cash - it comes
from you, the consumer. When you
pays your money, you makes your
choice. Pid< o lot of licensed games

64 4 YC

and rhe publishers buy more
licences. Ask for more 5om Fox and
you'll probably get her. Reject
overtly sexual promotion and if
enough people do it, you'll
probably get a response. Whatever
you decide about sexism, this is one
issue about when it's easy to moke
your opinions know. If you've got
the cash you've got a vote. And
how you vote is up to you.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE?

VIXEN - In an ingenious bid to
camouflage tedious gameplay,
Marrech rook a silly pic of Cofinnne

PSYCHO PIGS UXB the od caused a

cover of Barbarian came in for so
much stick, Palace made a bid for
equality in Barbarian II. The sequel
lets you play the heroine as well as
the hero.

tasteful little number was banned

Digirol Integration is
q Camberly-bosed software
house which occupies
several offices on a small our
of the way industrial area. It has
been in business since 1962 when it
produced Fighter Pilot on the
humble ZX-61 . Since that
inauspiscious milestone, D.I. has built
o sound reputation as producer of
the best simulations around.

Amongst its post titles are
Tomahawk TT Racer and Bobsleigh,
which, along with Fighter Pilot and F-
16 Combat Riot, were all
simulations of their subject. In
amongst all of these simulations
there lurks a gome which is more of
an arcade style and format. That
gome is Advanced Tactical Fighter
(ATF), "A bit of a digression" for

CAMBERLY

Digital Integration, who ore currently
working on o 1 6-bir sequel, ATF2.

If you ask someone who Digital
tnregrarion is, rhe chances are that
they won't know. This is not
surprising, as rhe company rends ro
keep a low profile. Its strategy tends
to be long term publicity campaign
during a gome's development. This
is usually followed by a sudden
outburst of interest as the game
neors completion. On launch, rhe
game is widely acclaimed; then D.I.
seem to vanish into rhe background
whilst the sales start clocking up.

F-1 6 Combat Pilot has taken
nine-plus man years ro complete. It
was developed over eighteen
months by a ream of programmers
and designers, whose emphasis was
always on speeding up the
program. Dave Marshall, head of
Digital and project designer and
manager: "We consanfly tried ro
shave microseconds off of rhe
reocrion and movement rime to
create as realisric a simulation as
possible." The Commodore 64
version of F-1 6 was worked on by
Dove, with Chris Medley
programming and graphics by Les
Doughrey.

The team has worked long and
hard to cram as much detail into the
64 as possible. As o result, the 64
and Amiga versions ore technically
almosr identical. Of course, the 64
cannot match the Amiga's graphics
capability or speed, and rhe objects
are wire frame instead of solid 3D.
However most of the features of the
1 6-bit version are still represented.

The 1 6-bir version was acdoimed
as the best simulator available this
side of a 02-bit machine, generally
used by the Ministry of Defence for
training real combat pilots. The 64
veraion manages to capture the
same feel as Its 1 6-bir counterpart,
and uses rhe maximum amounr of
available memory space. Despire
this, the graphics hove not suffered
and the game still looks polished.
However, the future for D.I. in the 8-
bif marker looks ro be fairly limited.

"The sixteen bit marker is still
being explored. However it's
definitely the future of D.I., you can
do so much more within o more
powerful machine. It's not that we
want to leave the eighr bir market,
but more that rhe size of the
machine just won't rake rhe
complexity of the projects any
more. There's only so much that
eighr bir machines can do. As ir is, ir
was a struggle to cram F-1 6 Combat

Pilot inro rhe 64."

The initial sales have hit around
1 7,000 units or so across the 1 6-bir
marker. Ir's always hard ro assess rhe
exact level of sales for a simulation
because its shelf-life is so long. But
the total sales overall are expected
ro rop 100,000. Such is Digital
Integrarion's success after launching
a new product that rhey can survive
through eighreen months of
development wirhour worrying
financially. Now that F-1 6 Combar
Pilor has been released, the sales
will continue throughout
development of their next projects.
And so its success continues.

So much has changed during rhe
age of computer home
entertainment in a very shorr while,
and yet Digital tnfegrorion is still
going strong inro rhe 19°0's. Many

companies have tried to cope wirh
rhe recession in sales by changing iK
image, its product or long rerm
srroregy. But Digiral has stuck to its
guns, obviously having found rhe
correcr formula first time around. In
the meantime, many of the smaller
companies have gone by the
wayside. But D.I. are now
expanding.

Wirh rhe backing of Electronic
Arts, if is marketing F-1 6 Combat
Pilot in America. This is a huge
marker area info which many British
software houses fail ro break. Digital
Integration's sortie inro that lucrative
yet fickle marker is yer anorher
testament to its achivemenrs as a
software house.

PURPLE FISH THANG

Ir's purple rime again!!!

Bloop. Oh dear fish friends,
rhough your Earthling
evenr of over indulgence,
namely Christmas, has come
and gone here on the aquatic
wonderworld of Czar, the rime
difference means that our annual
celebrations of all things fishy have
yet to fake place. And somehow,
thanks to communicating with the
witless YC boy Henderson by FTL-
mail-kind link the fool has
transmitted what you eorrhlings call
a 'hangover' to our entire
population. This outrage shall not go
unpunished dirt grubbers, even now
the great war engines of Czar ore
being prepared. But first here is the
latest gossip brought ro me by my
spies.

ACTIVI5I0N

Amanda Barry, Activision's PR
supremo, is leaving the exciting
metropolis of Reading for dull old
London and a job at Lynne Frante
PR. infamous for its Zen Bhuddisf
temple in the centre of the office,
and its terrible coffee.

MIRRORSOFT

Following on from rhe Bloodwych
disaster, more bad news from
Mirrorsofr concerns Dynamic
Debugger. Apparently rhe
programmer was supposed to have
finished rhe game by the beginning I
of November, bur hos since
steadfastly refused ro contact the
company. Our fish on the spot (in his
bowl of course) also reports
increasing levels of strife ar rhe
company. While punter's calls abour
games not working echo around
the product department all day,
and personal colters are walled up
behind srad^s of returned discs, rhe
two main girlies. Cathy in PR and
Charlie in Product are striving for the
title of Mirrorsoft Sex Symbol. The
office is apparently awash with
blusher and eye shadow.

FOCUS

Well known publishing house Focus,
well known beacuse oil rhe decenr
people have left it thanks ro the
jobs for the boys' management, has
inflicted a defear on boy Henderson
and his plucky troops. Using such
nefarious tactics as 'passing rhe ball',
and a heady mixture of knuckle
butties and low alcohol lager at half
rime rhe footballers of Argus were
unlucky losers in a right game,
decided only when the referee
blew his whistle at rhe end.
Commented our Rik after rhe
game, 'they caught us by surprise,
they started rhe game ten minutes
before we arrived. If was the secret
ractic rhot finished us off rhough.
Who would have believed rhar they
could "pass" rhe ball'.

The final score in this nail-biting
game was Focus 1 0, Argus 1 . (I
thought I told you to forget abour
this! - Ed).

EMAP

The one golden name of EMAP,
publishers of adding C+VG, and

Com p. Industry

Karma Sutra

buyers fo ACE, has been rornished
recently. First the Deputy Editor of
ACE, Richard Haynes, or DiaX as mosr
people fondly call him, humilated
himself and provided a good
warering spot for infirm dogs by
foiling over dead drunk at a press
bash. It was touch and go for Dick,
bur the soorhing ministrations of NHS
nurses brought him bad< from rhe
brink and he was discharged rhe
next day.

Then there was a gteaf furore
over o review of Ghosrbusters II in
ACE, when ir was given rhe
equivalent of 25%. A cowardly
pseudonym was used on the
review, which hos all the hallmarks
of a writer working nor a thousand
miles from Priory Court. Activision
were so incensed by the review,
which rumour hos if was so damning
because rhe wrirer didn't ger rher
review copy before anyone else,
rhar rhe US parent firm has advised
and lawyers informed. Ir also
resulred in Lorry 5parks having o
clenched teeth meeting with Dick
Haynes of ACE and Terry Praar rhe
publisher.

That's all from I, rhe Purple Fish Lord,
for this Earth month. Until next rime,
may your bowl be forever clean.
